Now we are on I-75/I-40 . . . watch for the police
(see police car symbol on map)
at mile 383 on the I-75/I-40 stretch. They use old unmarked cars along here to catch speeders.
If speeding, an older car driven by a plain clothes officer may pull alongside you, show a badge and signal you over to the shoulder. |

Soon, a regular patrol car called by radio, will pull up and issue a ticket.
The traffic normally moves well along this section of the freeway but just as in any other stretch of I-75, an accident or unscheduled road repair can disrupt the flow causing a traffic jam. Do you see the brown line marking US70 & US11 (the "Kingston Pike") , drawn on the map to the left of the freeway? It's part of the old "Dixie Highway" and runs parallel to I-75/I-40 providing an "escape" route should the freeway get jammed. The map shows which exits reach the side route and which will bring you back to I-75.Our maps show these "escape" routes all the way alongside I-75, between Detroit and Florida. Should the freeway traffic become heavy, this is information you will find really useful. Do you notice the small square symbols near exit 380 and 378? These let you know that a hospital, police, pharmacy and vet (or animal hospital) are close by. Incidentally, all of the symbols used on these colored maps are shown on a handy chart, just inside the book's front cover. Finally on this stretch, at exit 378 the black diamond symbol with a yellow "S" indicates that there is a 24 hour "Superstore" at this exit.
